I believe in the power of nature. When I lay in the grass with the sun wrapping around my skin like a warm blanket and the wind whispering in the background, I am where I should be. When I stand on a mountainside and I gaze out upon the stretch of trees I am overcome with a sense of insignificance. When I see a coyote trotting quietly through the desert brush I see another world.
My daily world is not one where I feel in touch with nature. I sit in air conditioned buildings with fluorescent artificial light, and aside from the short walk across a parking lot to my car I do not get to spend a lot of time outside.
Every now and then, though, I am blessed with a magical moment in which I realize what I am missing. It is when I travel to the forests up North and feel the cool air on my face. It is on a vacation when ocean waves chase my sandy feet. It is when I drive a few miles from my house and soak up sights of all the wildflowers painting the majestic mountainsides. My soul feels at ease when I am there.
When I take a step back and I see the world, not how man made it but how it is without human interference, that is when I feel that I have a real place here.
Standing on the side of a cliff and being a mere speck amongst the trees makes my worries melt away and my problems seem less important. There is comfort in knowing that an entire world is living and thriving outside of my problems. I am just one dot on this globe and sometimes it feels good to feel so small.
For me, nature is healing. It heals my heart and soul and it refreshes my perspective. Nature provides me with answers and it clears my mind from a million racing thoughts. Nature teaches me that every flower, every sunrise, every day is a gift to be treasured and it is a gift that does not wait for me. It is my responsibility to acknowledge, accept, and appreciate the gifts that have been laid before me.
I see a miracle when a bird flies alongside the window of my car, in the intricate pattern of tree branches, and in each glowing sunset. I see my future on the horizon.
