One Day

They say “don’t judge a book by its cover” but we all do, right?  And I would actually kind of like to think, as somewhat of a designer, that the book cover really, really matters.  When I was on the subway in New York I spotted a girl reading the book One Day by David Nicholls.  I was staring at the book wondering what it was about, swore I would make a mental note to look it up on Amazon later, got off at my stop and immediately forgot the name of the book.

It turns out that this book and I were meant to meet, as I scanned the bookshelves at my hostel in Dublin, searching for any sort of literary fare that would give me something to look at before bed and occupy my time on the flights.  I saw those familiar silhouetted orange faces and I immediately snatched it and smuggled it all the way to home to good ol’ America.  It was a good steal.  And I have already passed it on.  About two days before I finished it I heard that there is a movie coming out on August 19, what timing!

Here is a synopsis from the movie’s website as well as the movie poster:

"After one day together – July 15th, 1988, their college graduation – Emma Morley (Academy Award nominee Anne Hathaway) and Dexter Mayhew (Jim Sturgess of Across the Universe) begin a friendship that will last a lifetime. She is a working-class girl of principle and ambition who dreams of making the world a better place. He is a wealthy charmer who dreams that the world will be his playground.

For the next two decades, key moments of their relationship are experienced over several July 15ths in their lives. Together and apart, we see Dex and Em through their friendship and fights, hopes and missed opportunities, laughter and tears. Somewhere along their journey, these two people realize that what they are searching and hoping for has been there for them all along. As the true meaning of that one day back in 1988 is revealed, they come to terms with the nature of love and life itself."

The author, David Nicholls, adapted the screenplay, so I am hoping it stays honest to the book.  I think Anne Hathaway will make a great Emma and Jim Sturgess is the perfect Dexter.  It was a great story, funny, thought provoking, and touching.  I am really looking forward to seeing this movie and definitely recommend reading this novel.
