QUOTEY QUOTES

I am cleaning out my folders on my work computer and found a document of quotes that I like and have collected.  It’s a mish mash, but kinda fun…who doesn’t love a good quote?  Enjoy!

Love? It's such a funny word… But I know it means wanting the best for the people you love, putting their interests above your own, always. Love does that. Love is what you live for." -Angelina Jolie

Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us.  -Oscar Wilde

The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who don't have it.  -George Bernard Shaw

You and I and everything in the universe are part of the infinite flow of the divine love. When we see this, we acknowledge that this same benevolence binds together all creation. When we harmonize with life we come into accord with the part of God that flows through everything. That all life be nurtured and protected is at once our mission and our prayer. -Morihei Ueshiba

It is much more difficult to judge oneself than to judge others. If you succeed in judging yourself rightly, then you are indeed a man of true wisdom.  -Antoine de Saint Exupéry

There is a crack in everything…that is how the light gets in.  -Leonard Cohen

Be as you are and hope that it's right. -Dizzy Gillespie

"The most exciting, challenging, and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself," she said. "And if you find someone to love the you that you love, well, that's just fabulous." -Carrie Bradshaw
Hemingway has his classic moment in "The Sun Also Rises" when someone asks Mike Campbell how he went bankrupt. All he can say is, "Gradually, then suddenly." That's how depression hits. You wake up one morning, afraid that you're gonna live. -Prozac Nation

“What I needed most at that moment was to lie in bed with someone who was fond of every inch of my skin.” – Animal Dreams by Barbara Kingsolver

“She collected animals and losers as if she were their patron saint.” – New Times

A friend is someone who knows your heart and sings it back to you when you have lost your way - Annonymous

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.
-Unknown

Creating something that can be seen, that can be felt, is like adding a dimension to reality that was never there before. -Unknown

"We turned at a dozen paces, for love is a duel, and looked at each other for the last time."
- Jack Kerouac, On the Road

"I realized that I had died and been reborn numberless times but just didn't remember because the transitions from life to death and back are so ghostly easy, a magical action for naught, like falling asleep and waking up again a million times, the utter casualness and deep ignorance of it."
- Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Part 2, Ch. 10

“Forgiveness is giving up the hope that the past could have been any different.” –the Oprah show

"You couldn't make yourself stop feeling a certain way, no matter what the other person did. You had to just wait. Eventually the feeling went away because others came along. Or sometimes it didn't go away but got squeezed into something tiny, and hung like a piece of tinsel in the back of your mind." -Elizabeth Strout, Olive Kitteridge

Your life is your life
don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission.
be on the watch.
there are ways out.
there is a light somewhere.
it may not be much light but
it beats the darkness.
be on the watch.
the gods will offer you chances.
know them.
take them.
you can’t beat death but
you can beat death in life, sometimes.
and the more often you learn to do it,
the more light there will be.
your life is your life.
know it while you have it.
you are marvelous
the gods wait to delight
in you.
Charles Bukowski- Laughing Heart

“I know what you’re trying to obtain and at least that’s two people in the world.  No one has to wake up and be you in the morning, except you.  So you have to listen, and do what’s happening in the deepest parts of your being.  There’s a quote from letters to a young poet that says ‘whatever is happening in your innermost being is worthy of your entire love.’ No one else gets to dictate what that is.  It’s yours.  You’ve been through so much, and I think you deserve more than ever to learn yourself again with this new adventure.” –Julie Bridwell

"That is what we are supposed to do when we are at our best
— make it all up —
but make it up so truly that later it will happen that way."
--Ernest Hemingway
Letter to F. Scott Fitzgerald (28 May 1934)

“If you haven't cried, your eyes cannot be beautiful”
- Sophia Loren

"Everything you see I owe to spaghetti."
-Sophia Loren

Ich würde nur an einen Gott glauben, der zu tanzen verstünde.
( I would only believe in a God that knows how to dance.)
Part I, Chapter 7, "Vom Lesen und Schreiben"/"On Reading and Writing"

Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward.
He once attributed their lasting union (of 50+years married) to
“correct amounts of lust and respect.”
He also offered a now famously quoted response when asked by Playboy magazine about the temptations of other women, he said
“I have steak at home. Why go out for hamburger?”

"We draw a magic circle & shut out everything
that doesn't agree with our secret games.
Each time life breaks the circle, the games turn grey & ridiculous.
Then we draw a new circle & build a new defense."
-Ingmar Bergman's "Såsom i en spegel" (1961)
